Oh, The Places You Should Go: 4 Reasons to Take a Vacay

Why you need a vacation - and why The Sampson House offers unlimited PTO.

As if you needed an excuse to take a vacation from work, here are reasons to book your next flight. Experts are saying that time away from the desk can boost your mood, productivity, and creativity. In April, The Sampson House took a little trip to Minneapolis to celebrate our second birthday and we agree that time away from the desk is a plus. We had the privilege of hearing some Minneapolis natives speak about their time in the creative and marketing industry. And guess what they all said? You need a break! Vacation is beneficial to your soul + work.

According to Moneywise, 4 out of 10 people don’t use up all of their vacation days because they are afraid of the work awaiting them once they return. Yikes! Not fun. Did you know that the number of people of taking vacations has decreased by 2 million people over the last few decades, leaving 9 days of vacation unused? [Send your vaycay days over. We will take care of them. ;)].

Here at the Sampson House we offer UNLIMITED PTO. You heard that correct, unlimited. We say, take all the time you need. We are all self-driven, hard working, and motivated individuals. Which means, we are able to manage our time productively all while not being restricted by PTO days. We encourage time away. It creates an incredible work culture. A change of scenery will do great wonders for inspiration.

Do you (or your boss) need some convincing? We’ve got you covered. Taking a vacation helps with...

1). Productivity. Since the brain uses 20% of the body’s energy (read more here), we tend to be going and thinking 24/7 which leads to burnout. Switching the view from a computer screen to an ocean will give your brains a very much needed break. Thus, leading to more productivity and fewer burnouts. Vacations create motivation before and after the trip to get as much done as possible.

2). Creativity. Having a routine is just that: routine. Finding creativity and inspiration can be hard. Just like writer’s block, creatives get a creative block. And to be quite frank, your daily office may not serve as much inspiration. Sometimes, you just need to step away from your regular routine and desk for a jolt of inspiration. Inspiration can be found in nature, in people, in cities, in cuisine, in anything new. Ashley Mary, a speaker at LAB MPLS, is a beautiful artist and designer. She painted us a picture of her last vacation that included daily walks on the beach. On the last day, she finally realized how beautiful the sea glass and shells were. These shells sparked an ah-ha moment inside! She could imitate the beauty of nature in her paintings and designs. Nature was her new inspiration.

3). The next ah-ha moment. We can assume it is safe many people fear ever starting to resent their jobs. So, what happens when you build something you love, but start to hate it and don’t know why? You may want to quit and throw everything away. This is what happened with Wit & Delight’s, Kate Arends. A legend that partnered with Target, has a following of almost 300K and curates brands for successful companies. She was ready to throw away all the hard work because she felt what she was doing did not matter anymore and she was out of motivation. However, after some time off, Ms. Kate came back rejuvenated and took her business to the next level. Imagine what a vacation can do for you + your work. Who knows? Maybe your break will bring you the next idea that takes your company to another level.

4). Recharge. This is what vacations are all about, recharging! You work hard and deserve a break. Having some time to think about things other than work, relax, and do nothing is the perfect way to relieve any stresses, sleep, and come back to feeling 100%.

You don’t have to book an extravagant vacation to Hawaii or Europe. A trip away to a surrounding city, or even a stay-cation, can be enough to refresh your mind + give you some much needed down time. Our end thoughts? Work hard, play hard. You deserve it.
